Peugeot & Citroen Sat Nav GPS Magneti Marelli RT3 systems
The Magneti Marelli RT3 systems are fitted on various models of vehicles, such as Peugeot, Citroen, Fiat and Lancia.
Models include:
Peugeot: 307, 807, 407, 607
Citroen: C3, C4, C5 and C8
Fiat ulysse and Lancia Phedra
The RT3 headunit is an all-in-one satellite navigation, telephone, radio, cd, MP3 headunit.
There are two types of RT3, one is for CAN-bus vehicles and the other is for VAN-bus vehicles.
Also, on each type, There is one for colour display and the other for monochrome display.

hi, you will need to check the fibre optic lead, make sure it is properly connected and not damaged..
the other thing you need to do is:
RT3 soft reset and hard reset
Soft reset: press and hold the “dark” button for 12 seconds and let the unit restart.
Hard reset: remove the apprpriate fuse or disconnect the battery for a few minutes.
Try these and let me know how it goes.

I have an RT3 unit that is on a 2004 Peugoet 407. I am not sure what model this is CAM or VAN but it is not the one in the picture if that helps? My unit is faulty at the moment. I am told by me dealer that the main unit is not ‘talking’ to the screen and that it cannot be fixed. Basically the screen comes on and displays the peugeot symbol but nothing relating to the trip counter, sat nav, cd player etc. The unit also turns itself n and off – so basically a nightmare. I was told to replace the system would be £1800. Are the units that you sell new or reconditioned – do you repair units? – Also is there any way I can checkthe screen in working ok? – So many questions.
Hi, thanks for contacting me regarding your RT3 matter.
A few weeks ago, a customer of mine had the same problem on his Peugeot 407, he took the car to Peugeot dealer and they tried a new screen on and it worked, so his problem was with the display, i have supplied him with a second hand display cause he couldn’t afford a new one ( £1600 ) and everything is working ok, sat-nav, radio, cd…etc
In your case, it depends how sure and competent the dealer you went to is, try to find out what they did, what diagnosis did they follow, ask them if they can try another unit, maybe they did and thats why they said you need another RT3 unit?
And yes a new RT3 unit costs about £1700 and a new screen will also cost around £1600 so unfortunately these equipments are not cheap.
if you are local to me ( london ), you could come to see me and i can fit another RT3 unit in your 407 and see what happens.

I tried to n upgrades to 8.11 and stopped working, the system HDD 30 GB. Radio/CD/MP3 / VIDEO, jukebox, auto klima, parktonik. Car height control. Parktronic, Telephone, Tire pressure indication.

Hi, I have an old Pug 206 (53 plate) with the monochrome displayed RT3. RT3 Unit is fine but my display has slowly died line by line by line. I now cant make anything out on the screen. Do you happen to have on of these older displays in your stock?

I have a problem with my RT3, that noone can help me solve it.
I drive a Citroen C4 VTS 2.0. My RT3 has colored monitor, and suddenly after 5,5 years RT3 can’t play any CD. I remind you that the CD slot is used for the Navteq Maps too. So, no music (wav or mp3) and no Navi. I phoned in the Magnetti Marelli here in Greece, but they do not support it. I tokk it to Citroen Hellas, but they dont know either what to do.
The other functions have no problem. Phone ok, Radio ok, GPS signals and positions ok, the only problem is the cd.
Unfortunately that machine is Class 1 Laser. Very poor quality.

I’ve also got a problem with my RT3. At random intervals (varying from seconds to weeks) it shuts down and immediately re-boots. The same thing usually happens when I try to use the sat nav – at some stage during the process pressing a button (it can be any button) causes it to shut down and re-boot.
A former Peugeot master technician told me that re-setting the BSI box would cure it but the local dealer said that wouldn’t work. He said re-installing the software should work but when it didn’t he said I needed a new unit at a cost of £1600!
Any ideas which would save me splashing out £1600 would be greatly appreciated.

Bought a Peugeot 307 cc 180 2003 with the RT3 unit intact and am trying to play my Iphone through the sound system. The car audio shops i went through don’t seem to have the right adapter for the CD changer slot at the back and the Aux in in the glovebox only works in video mode with the car stationary. Any idea how to get the Au in to work at speed/

I need rt3 display, it seems that there is no signal going from display to radio. The monitor is on but only with the citroen logo and it is reseting every few minutes, together with the radio.

Yes, I have the same problem. Blue lion dsiplay, Radio/CD seems to work but restarts every two minutes. No Systemcomputer to see.

1 is for gps,1 for gsm i think, 1 is antena and the last is a black big one. Do you think that i can put a color display insted of the monocrome one?

My RT3 satnav has suddenly decided it can only see one or two satellites and hence is now very lost. This looks likely to be an attenna problem. Does anyone have any idea where the attenna is mounted and how the cable is routed on a 307cc?
Hi, I have problem with RT3 Monochrome on a 2003 Ulysse. Seems quite common complete loss of radio signal. Have tried belkin mp3 transmitter up close and that doesn’t work either so I guess that rules out the aerial system, can you repair or shall I look to buy one and have it recoded by you or better still do you have one for sale and would you take mine back in part-ex.
Like one of your earlier post I have problem with my RT3 on my 2004 Pug 307cc. If I leave the unit then it can work fine for a while but when pressing buttons it goes into this reboot thing, now keeps the Time but resets the date to 2000. I only just brought the car a few weeks ago from the Bay and it seemed ok at first, I love the car but don’t have a mass of money and came across your sit & you seem to know your stuff. Please help,

I recently bought the 307cc 180 for my wife but it came with the monochrome display and crappy 5 disc changer that works when it wants to, i have trawled the net looking to see if its possible to install the GPS, SatNav, Cd with colour screen and what kind of price it would come in at ( it was a cheap car i wont waste big money replacing things that aren’t necessary) but i can’t find anything, could someone please give me some ideas on price for this full unit and installation costs as well. i, I am in need of a full Rt3 Van monochrome system. Just the head unit and screen. My head unit seems to be working ok but the screen is unreadable. I got a second hand screen from ebay france and took it to my dealer to install. They said that they couldn’t do it, that there is something wrong with the head unit. When they’d done it cost me £80 for them to do nothing appart from mess up my head unit. It came back with all the letters jumbled up on screen. I just rebooted and everything was back to the stripey screen normal. 🙁

i have just bought a pug 307 on a 2004 plate the sat nav is working fine along with the phone and the time and all the other things
the problem i have is there is no out side air temperature on the dispaly screen but the car i fitted with an out side air unit in the passengers side wing mirror i have replaced the air prob for a new one but still have nothing on the display unit i have also fitted and new door motor that the air prob plugs in to

help i have a 307 cc 2004 and tried to put the sat nav disc in the screen went blank now the screen says peugeot and ready at the bottom right corner but nothing else happens. the cd player wont work and neither will the radio in fact nothing works not even my trip computer . nothing changes on the screen help. not sure if the disc was the right one someone lent it to me. please help

I have Lancia Phedra 2004 with RTC (colour) and display doesn’t work any more. So far I have detected, that backlight doesn’t work (still not sure either there is a problem with CCFL tube or transformer for high voltage). Do you have maybe only display or backlight in stock?

You probably have a faulty GPS antenna module, the one that sits on the roof, otherwise, it would be a faulty GPS card ( inside RT3 headunit )

Thanks for your quick reply. When you say card in head unit do you mean a built in gps card that can’t be changed and I would have to have a new head unit or something easier to deal with. Also is there any way to check which option you mention is the faulty item. thanks
Hi, the GPS card can be changed if that is the faulty item.
You can only find out which one is faulty by substitution, ie, replace the antenna module first and see what happens

Hi again. I would like to remove the head unit to check the card. Do I need any special tools like the 2 metal prongs used to remove head units. I only ask as I dont have any but could I knock a couple up or use something else. If when removed is the card like a motherboard with chips & capacitors etc, if so It might show signs of failure or not. Also is the attenna only for the GPS. I ask because the radio signal is fine.

hello there, i’m hoping you can help…..i have a 53 plate 2004 307 sw with the rt3 head, 5 disc changer and full colour screen….the changer accepts discs but won’t play anything, the head unit works fine apart from it won’t pull a disc in so won’t play a disc. the radio/phone etc is ok, but after a longish run the system is overheating and comes up with various messages such as ‘volume reduced due to overheat/system will shut down/telephone stopped working’ etc. i presume this is because the header is ‘trying’ to do something with the disc but is unable to, thus, using more power and creating more heat. so, a, can the problem with the ‘disc accepting’ mechanism be sorted? b, is there a way to connect up a usb lead to the head unit using the 5 disc changer connecting cable (as you can with the rt4 and rt5 as i’ve seen in your previous posts) or, c, would it be easier to just chuck the whole lot and go for an aftermarket headunit and not have the screen working, as the only thing that would be missing is the clock and outside temperature.
if there’s any suggestions you could make, that would be helpful, but i’m losing patience rather rapidly with what is otherwise a decent car.

According the Peugeot garage the first four numbers have to start with 9653…. otherwise it’s not competable with the system.

I have a 307 54 plate and after changing the battery i have found that the rt3 stereo system does not work.
I have taken it to a peugeot dealer and they have run diagnostic tests and they are unable to find the cause of the problem.
They have recommended that a specialist take a look at it.
I was wondering if you have any advice on how to rectify this problem.

Hi, I have an rt3 in a peugeot 307. The radio wouldn’t turn off even with the ignition turned off. I disconnected then reconnected the unit but now the screen only shows the peugeot logo and says ready at the bottom right of the screen.
Do I need to buy a new one and if so is it a can or bus?

I have a RT3ev-N3-Q1 that was in my Peugeot 207 from new (08) always been a good item, then I had message on screen “please insert update CD” and nothing was working, No satnav, radio,or even my parking sensors, I phoned main dealers, and you would think I was talking in foreign language, absolutely NO help whatsoever, mechanic friend of mine suggested buying upgrade CD, but what one did I need, I went to my hand book and all I could see was RT4 with pic of my unit, so I bought from good company on Internet, It came as a 3 CD pack, and I put the first one in with engine running as instructed, after about half hour, I thought this isn’t working, and I tried to eject, but it won’t come out, now I have taken unit out of car, and I am ready to take top plate off to (if pos) to retrieve CD, I really need help, if your in London I would like to bring to you, thanks,

I have a Citroen C5 with an RT3 head unit CD/MP3/Sat Nav which started to reset itself randomly finally stopping all together and going to a splash screen with the Citroen logo on and 2.13 appearing in the bottom left hand corner asking for an upgrade CD. I got the upgrade CD from the Citroen dealership but that doesn’t seem to do anything. I’ve done a hard reset by disconnecting the car battery for a few hours, again to no avail. I’m wondering if this is something you can fix and what sort of cost. I’m in St Leonards on Sea, East Sussex, UK. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yes you can upgrade to Rt4 or RT5, you will have to change the instrument panel, fit gps and gsm antenna, modify the wiring loom slightly.
At the moment i do not have instrument panels for C4 Picasso in stock

I have a Magneti Marelli RT3 system with the full JBL packagein my 2005 peugeot 407. It’s a perfect system, there’s only one problem……. there’s no sound. No matter what I do and tried I can’t get it to work.
For the CD the volume indicates 13 and for the radio it indicates 30. I can’t change these settings. As soon as I push the volume button the system display the volume,, but it can’t be changed. Als the sound button n( next to the source ) is not working.
I already disconnected battery, replaced fuses in fuse box and in the back of the radio itself. I even upgraded the software from 6.61 to 6.63, but the problem remains.
Someone has an idea? I ran out….

Hi, I have a 2007 Peugeot 407 Gt with RT4 system I believe. Basically the system wont start up. When i picked the car up a few days ago it just had the Peugeot logo on the screen with a message ‘please insert upgrade disc’.
Now it just has a completely blank screen.
Is this something you have come across and something you could fix.

Yes you can do that, but you have to change the RT3 headunit, the one you have is for monochrome screen, you will need one for colour screen

My daughter recently got a 307cc (2005 model} and I was looking at replacing her radio/5 cd changer to either a double din unit or one of these RT3.
Is the RT3 a direct plug and play or does it need cables/adapter changes. Also will the steering wheel controls and reversing sensor warnings still work (I think some double din units mess up the reverse sensors).. Could you supply everything needed to swap out with the old?

And also since this is showing I cannot hear any music, as if it like speakers does not work at all, I checked all the outputs and everything is all right.

I can not change the language and a few other settings on system for my Lancia Phedra 2004. I bought the Magnetti Marelli configuration CD from the dealer last week and when I put it in it just sends it back — and does not run the install process. Any suggestions?

I have a 2004 Citroen c8, fitted with a rt3 radio/CD/satnav/phone.
I have a problem, when I purchased the car the CD slot on the unit wasn’t working you can put a CD in but nothing happens, so I noticed a blue plug between the front seats after a little research I found its for a CD changer, so I have bought a changer (from another c8) and plugged it in but the unit doesn’t recognise it either, it powers up etc but when I press source it just stays on the radio…is my rt3 unit broken?
